6/14/01 The Oņatz dancers
rehearse all year, but the Korpus dancers had put in a month
and a half of grueling practices at least three times a week
by this point. The big day was only 3 days off and
Director Jesus Irizar was going over the final lists to
determine who would dance when.

The feast of Corpus Christi was intended to celebrate the body of Christ
in the Eucharist. The canopy being set up here covers a vessel
containing the Blessed Sacrament that is carried in the
procession. These men are setting the canopy up a few days ahead
of time in the cloister of the church San Miguel. |

These kinds of repairs were pretty typical by the end of
the first month rehearsing hard. The castanets
often caused blisters and calluses. Although the dancers
practiced outdoors, the rehearsal room often had the
eucalyptus-like smell of sore muscle ointment |

Roughly two hours later the canopy was prepared for the
procession and was moved to a space near the altar. |
