4/15/01 The kontra iantzak are
performed by couples in the plaza. In addition to four kontra
iantzak these dancers also do Iantza Luzea which is
sometimes also referred to as Madari Dantza, the pear
dance.

This miniature makilari spontaneously ran into the
performance space and was treated to a lesson from
an expert. The crowd went wild. His impeccable
costume was made by his grandmother for the occasion. His mother
told me he had been looking forward to being a makilari all year long. |

a unique custom the axe and tupina accompanied
by gorriak walk around the fronton
three times after which spectators attack them with the
intention of ripping away their costumes which are
covered with brambles. |
