5/10/01 The University of Sancti Spiritus was built in Oņati
between 1540 and 1548. This was the first university in the
Basque Country, and the only one for centuries. The
stone was quarried in Oa near the town of Zerain, Gipuzkoa.

This is the archive of Oņati's Udaletxea or city
hall. I spent nearly every morning here researching
pieces of the history of the town's dance tradition that
were beyond the collective memory. A huge eskerrik
asko to Javier Arriaran, Gerardo and other staff members for
all of their help and kindness. |

This monument is situated in Urrintxo about 300 meters
outside of Oņati. It was created by Basque artist
Nestor Basterretxea and dedicated to the Basque
sheepherder in 1998. The stone markers that border it
each represent a Basque province, with the exception of
one that represents Basques in the Americas. |

This document from 1765 shows payment of 165 reales to
the dance master of the group that accompanied the
Corpus Christi procession that year. Through
documents like these I was able to compile a list of
directors and other interesting facts. |
